Subpar pool didn’t start out as a pool or a golf game. Initially, it was a game inspired by the wonderful Japanese movie genre of “big monster attacks city”, or Kaiju for short. The player was to fling themselves along city streets and wreak general havoc.
However, as development went on the game changed shape, walls could no longer be destroyed and the more I approached traditional ball games, the better it became. Once I figured out the card-switching mechanic the combinatorics of that really opened up what the game could do.
Developing this game also made me realize how similar golf and pool can be. When it comes down to it, both are about getting a ball in a hole in as few moves as possible! I also found the opportunity to include a few of my own philosophies around playing both golf and pool. The holes are big, the balls are small, and most importantly: you always shoot at maximum power!
grapefrukt games consists of exactly one guy, Martin. He got into game making in a big way around the time of the experimental gameplay project and still uses that same methodology; Making a bunch of small games to see if a concept works and then build upon the ones that do.
